Everyday Promises – 34

Not used up

For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’” 1 Kings 17:14

God commanded Elijah, a prophet, to inform the wicked, idolatrous King Ahab that there would be no rain in Israel until God decreed it. Elijah then concealed himself from Ahab. Later, God directed Elijah to a widow on the brink of death due to the famine. Elijah promised her sustenance, but with a precondition: he must be fed first. This demand may appear self-centered at first, but it teaches a vital lesson. In dire situations, it may seem prudent to use all we have for self-preservation, yet God calls us to prioritize Him in all things, including our tithes and offerings. He assures us that if we do, He will fulfill His promise to us. We are encouraged to trust in God’s word before witnessing His actions. While wealth is unreliable, we can always rely on God to provide for our needs.
