The Name of the Lord

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 NIV

Between 1386 and 1797 the Venetians ruled the island of Corfu and this old fortress withstood  many assults by the Ottoman empire. The name of God is like a fortress too. To God, names are incredibly important. God’s name “I Am” speaks of his eternal nature and diverse character. El Shaddai – means God Almighty, Jehovah Shammah – means the LORD who is there and Jehovah Jireh – means the LORD is my provider. Names reflect the character of the bearer, as we see in the naming and renaming of the patriarchs. In Revelation 2:17 it says we will also be given a new name when Jesus comes. Our old sinful self will be gone and a new perfect self will exist. Our new name will reflect the change. Importantly, the power of Jesus name is still evident today as people claim deliverance from the forces of darkness, and the power of sin in his name. Jesus is indeed a fortified tower and we can run there and be safe. Let the name of the Lord surround you.
