Everyday Promises – 355

Rest in death

Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death. Isaiah 57:2 NIV

I had only seen my father once in my life. He abandoned my family before I was born and took no care or interest in us again. When I was 31 I visited Cairns and went to see my father. It was not a wonderful visit. I was sure I would never see or hear from him again. However one day, some years later, I found a message in my communication box at school. It had a phone number and said, “Please contact your father urgently.” That evening I called him. He told me he did not have much time to live and he wanted to say sorry for deserting us. We chatted for a few minutes and then he said goodbye. Perhaps my Dad’s conscience was troubling him, and he was trying to make everything right before he passed away. Conversely, those who love and serve God can go to their death peacefully because they know that they will be safe in God’s care forevermore, and truly find a place of rest.
