28 Dec Meditations on the Psalms #14
Day 14
Psalm 3: Read here – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%203&version=NASB
– Peace amidst calamity: See 2 Samuel 15-18, The heart of David at that difficult time with Absalom is recorded in this Psalm.
V1&2 David’s Trouble and God’s help: David’s son led what seemed to be a successful rebellion against him. Previous friends and associates forsook him and joined the ranks of those who troubled him. David’s situation was so bad that many felt he was beyond God’s help. Some would have said that God was unwilling to help him. They looked at David’s past sin and figured, this is all that he deserves from God.
If we were to add up all our trials and temptations, there is nothing so terrible as what is contained in this verse. It is the most bitter of all afflictions to be led to fear that there is no help for us in God.
V2-6 What God Did in the midst of trouble: While looking hopeless David knew that God was his ‘shield.’ Betrayal couldn’t shake David’s confidence in a God of love and help. He knew that God was his shield. This is a strong declaration of faith: ‘lift my head’ so, like David, I can Look beyond my circumstances. People find ‘glory’ in all sorts of things – fame, wealth, power, prestige, or possessions. David found his ‘glory’ in the LORD. Notice he prayed aloud and God heard him. God was in control from the holy hill that Absalom had overtaken.
V5-6 Blessings from God: Under intense pressure from his circumstances David was able to sleep, no mean feat when a great army was hunting him. David could stand against any foe. Before it was written David knew the truth of Romans 8:31: If God is for us, who can be against us?
V7-8 David prays to God. David’s mind was both on what he trusted God to do and on what God had done. This was his confidence. ‘Arise’ is a military term as is the vivid metaphor of breaking teeth. David is looking for victory.
Notice the word Selah: A musical term meaning to pause and reflect. This term is common in the psalms.
