Meditations on the Psalms #295

Psalm 128 Part 2

The whole life of a Godly person is covered in this psalm. The walk of v1 is an outward expression of the inward ‘fear’. No one really fears the Lord who does not walk in His ways. The fear is the cause; the walk is an effect. If we are blessed in any way through marriage, we should accept those blessings as shadows of those which are eternal; if they are denied, we should remember that they are only shadows, Marriage is meant to be a foretaste of heaven, unfortunately, some make it a foretaste of the other place! Marriage is meant to be a duet, not a duel. It is meant to transform the loneliness of our days into intimacy and the silence of our nights into songs, where we, together, might sing the spell-binding tune on the lips of life. Like Adam’s amazement in paradise before Eve, love whispers in the ear of our soul. A woman becomes a pillar of light-filled with mysteries and wonders where she then leads us to the garden of love. A woman was the crowning act of God’s creation. He saved the best till last!

‘The LORD bless you out of Zion,’ (v5). Consider this: much of the teaching and ministry Jesus did was in and around Jerusalem, we see that we are blessed out of Zion. He died as our sacrifice and substitute for sin there. He rose from the dead and ascended to heaven from Jerusalem. The gospel was first preached there and the church was birthed there. We are truly blessed out of Zion!

The psalm ends with this happy and confident benediction of peace (shalom). The psalmist understood that if the people of Israel feared the LORD, this blessing of shalom would be evident in their community, in their family, and in the kingdom as a whole. In English peace refers to harmony between two entities e.g. between God and man or countries. The richness of the Hebrew word shalom means peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare, and tranquillity and can be used idiomatically to mean both hello and goodbye. I pray God’s shalom over you today!
