My Favourite Stories #185

Amy Carmichael

Amy Carmichael was a remarkable Irish missionary who dedicated her life to serving others, particularly in Southern India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her story is filled with inspiration and spiritual lessons that we can apply to our own lives.

Amy Carmichael was born on December 16, 1867, in Millisle, County Down, Ireland. From a young age, she had a strong desire to serve God and felt called to mission work. In 1895, she travelled to India as a missionary.

One of the most significant aspects of Amy Carmichael’s work was her dedication to rescuing young girls from temple prostitution, a practice known as the devadasi system. These girls, often referred to as “temple slaves,” were dedicated to serving the gods in Hindu temples, but in reality, they were trapped in a life of sexual exploitation.

Amy was deeply disturbed by this injustice and made it her mission to save these girls from their dire circumstances. She established the Dohnavur Fellowship, a home and refuge for these young girls, providing them with safety, education, and the opportunity to know the love of God.

Amy faced numerous challenges in her rescue efforts. She had to disguise herself as a Hindu woman to gain access to the temples and gather evidence against the practices. She also faced opposition from those who profited from the temple system. Despite these obstacles, she remained steadfast in her conviction to help these girls find freedom and hope.

Amy Carmichael’s story demonstrates the power of compassion and love in action. She was deeply moved by the plight of these young girls and was willing to sacrifice her own comfort and safety to rescue them. Her example challenges us to have compassion for those who are oppressed or in need and to take tangible steps to alleviate their suffering.

Another spiritual lesson we can learn from Amy Carmichael is the importance of perseverance and faith in the face of challenges. Despite the resistance she encountered and the cultural barriers she had to navigate; Amy never gave up on her mission. She relied on her faith in God and trusted His guidance and provision. Her determination inspires us to remain steadfast in our own endeavours, even when the road ahead seems difficult.

Amy Carmichael’s story also emphasizes the value of standing up against injustice. She recognized the systemic exploitation and oppression of these young girls and took bold action to address it. Her example reminds us to be advocates for justice, speaking out against social ills and working towards a more equitable world.

Furthermore, Amy’s story highlights the transformative power of love and grace. Through her care and nurturing, many of the rescued girls experienced healing and restoration. They encountered the love of God and were able to build new lives filled with hope. It serves as a reminder that our acts of love and kindness can have a profound impact on others and can be instruments of God’s transformative grace.

The story of Amy Carmichael is a testament to the power of compassion, perseverance, justice, and love. Her life challenges us to examine our own commitments to serving others, to stand against injustice, and to demonstrate the transformative power of God’s love in tangible ways. May her example inspire us to live with greater compassion and purpose, making a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
