My Favourite Stories #236

A Little Bird Told Me.

Cammy was crushed when Dee invited practically every girl she knew to her sleepover party but didn’t invite her. “Some friend she is,” Cammy stormed to her neighbour, Josie. “I thought she was one of my best friends, but after this she can move or get lost or whatever. See if I care!”

The next day she found her party invitation crumpled under a magazine where her little brother had thrown the mail when he brought it in. Her anger melted like ice cream in the sun, and she ran to call Dee to accept the invitation.

Dee sounded as if she didn’t care if she ever heard from Cammy again. Finally, Cammy asked, “What’s wrong with you anyway?”

Dee exploded. Wrong with me! You’re the one who’s going around talking about me behind my back.”

Cammy gulped. “I – I just wondered how come you didn’t ask me to your party…”

I did ask you,” Dee yelled.

But I didn’t find the invitation until just now,” Cammy tried to explain.

It didn’t help. “That’s no excuse for telling people you wished I’d move or get lost,” Dee snapped.

That mouthy Josie, Cammy thought. She asked, “who told you? I said it only because I felt terrible.”

“A little bird told me, and how do you think I feel? Why didn’t you trust me? After all, we’re supposed to be almost best friends.” Dee hung up, leaving Cammy more miserable than before.

Did you ever wonder where the expression “a little bird told me” came from? It is a very old expression and may have come from Ecclesiastes 10:20 which says, “Never make light of the king, even in your thoughts. And don’t make fun of the powerful, even in your own bedroom. For a little bird might deliver your message and tell them what you said.”(NLT) The writer knew only too well  that people gossip.  Also, people have ways of finding out practically our very thoughts! Cammy was hurt that Josie had carried her words to Dee. Maybe Josie had always been jealous of Cammy and Dee’s friendship. Maybe she just liked to cause trouble. Whatever, it ended up with Dee being angry at Camy, and Cammy being angry at both Josie and herself.

Someone else hears everything we say and even knows what we think. God doesn’t miss a thing. When we’re upset and grumble and scream or think mean things about others, God knows. Only His great love is big enough to forgive us. Cammy and Dee may patch things up and still be friends. Maybe they’ll both learn a lesson. We need to learn that same lesson by asking forgiveness of both God and whoever we’ve hurt.
