Mover of Men and Mountains.
About eight years after the book “Mover of Men and Mountains” was published in 1967 I read it. It is the autobiography of R.G. LeTourneau, detailing his life as a creative entrepreneur and devout Christian. The book narrates his journey from modest beginnings to becoming a pioneering force in the heavy equipment industry. It underscores his innovative mindset, unshakeable faith, and commitment to charitable work. The title symbolizes his dual role as a technological innovator and a transformative influence on people’s lives. LeTourneau’s faith shines through in various instances, like his unwavering trust in God during financial challenges and his dedication to tithing, demonstrating his profound belief in the power of faith in overcoming obstacles and making a positive impact on the world. In the book he testifies to the fact that the more he gave to God, the more God blessed his business endeavours. LeTourneau said on one occasion, “It’s not how much of my money I give to God, but how much of God’s money I keep for myself.” Eventually he was giving 90% of his income to God and was living of the 10%, and was still wealthy.
R.G. LeTourneau, born in 1888, was a remarkable American inventor, businessman, and devout Christian. He is best known for his contributions to the heavy equipment industry, particularly in the design and manufacturing of earthmoving machinery. Despite having little formal education, LeTourneau’s inventive mind and entrepreneurial spirit led him to create some of the most innovative and efficient earthmoving equipment of his time.
LeTourneau’s success was not solely measured in terms of business achievements but also in his deep commitment to his faith and his understanding of the principle of tithing. Tithing is a practice in many religious traditions where individuals donate a portion of their income, typically ten percent, to support religious institutions and charitable causes.
Throughout his life, R.G. LeTourneau was a dedicated tither. He firmly believed in the biblical principle of giving back to God a portion of what he earned. Despite facing financial challenges in the early years of his business, he remained faithful to his commitment of tithing. As his business prospered, he continued to give a significant portion of his income to support various religious and charitable organizations. It is well-documented that he was a faithful tither and that his generosity played a significant role in supporting religious and philanthropic causes during his lifetime.
LeTourneau’s life serves as a testament to his belief in the importance of giving back, not only in terms of financial contributions but also in terms of his time, talents, and innovative spirit. His legacy lives on through the R.G. LeTourneau University, which he founded, and through the impact of his charitable contributions that continue to benefit communities and individuals around the world.
