Prayer runs an orphanage.
George Müller (1805-1898) was a Christian evangelist and the director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. He is widely known for his remarkable faith and reliance on prayer to provide for the children under his care.
In the early 19th century, George Müller embarked on a mission that would test the limits of his faith and God’s providence. He established the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, with a vision to provide a safe haven for the city’s homeless and orphaned children. Unlike other charitable institutions of his time, Müller refused to solicit funds or rely on wealthy benefactors. Instead, he turned to prayer as his primary source of support.
One day, as the orphanage population grew, the pantry shelves stood bare, and there was no food to feed the children. With a heavy heart but steadfast faith, Müller gathered the children for their morning prayer. He thanked God for His provision, even though there was no food in sight. As they were praying, a baker knocked on the door, bringing fresh bread for the children. The baker explained that he couldn’t sleep the previous night and felt compelled to bake bread for the orphanage.
On another occasion, the orphanage faced a severe winter with no blankets to keep the children warm. Undeterred, Müller and the children prayed for God’s help. Soon after their prayer, a man knocked on the door, delivering blankets that he felt led to donate. The children were not only provided for but also witnessed the direct answers to their fervent prayers.
As the orphanage continued to grow, so did the challenges. One morning, the children sat down for breakfast, but the plates and cups were empty. Without hesitation, Müller prayed, thanking God for the meal they were about to receive. At that very moment, a milkman’s cart broke down right outside the orphanage. To prevent the milk from spoiling, the milkman gave Müller and the children all the milk they could drink. God had once again provided in the most unexpected way.
Müller’s faith and reliance on prayer were not limited to material needs. He also prayed fervently for the salvation of the children under his care. Over the years, many of the orphans found faith in Christ, and Müller’s prayers for their spiritual well-being were answered.
Through countless instances like these, George Müller’s life became a testament to the power of prayer and unwavering faith. His legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding the world of a simple yet profound truth: that prayer, coupled with faith, can move mountains and provide for even the most impossible needs.
