The Sacrifice of a Mother.
Some time ago, in a small town, there lived a widowed mother and her infant son. The mother, despite facing numerous hardships after her husband’s death, had grand dreams for her child. She worked tirelessly, often going without many things, to provide her son with the best possible education.
As the years passed, the young boy excelled in his studies. His mother’s sacrifices knew no bounds as she managed to pay for his school fees, books, and other educational expenses. With unwavering determination and her relentless efforts, the boy finally earned a place in a prestigious university to study medicine.
Throughout his years in university, the young man’s mother continued to work hard, going to great lengths to ensure her son’s education was not interrupted. She endured financial struggles, all the while keeping her focus on the dream of seeing her son graduate as a successful doctor.
The day finally arrived when the young man was set to graduate with a medical degree. His mother, filled with pride and joy, attended the graduation ceremony. However, life had been unkind to her, and she couldn’t afford fine clothes for such an occasion. Despite her financial difficulties, she made her way to the ceremony, hoping to share in her son’s achievement. This was her day as well as his.
When the young man saw his mother’s modest appearance, he felt a pang of embarrassment. He was surrounded by his friends, who were dressed in elegant attire, and he didn’t want them to know about his humble background. In an act of thoughtless arrogance, he turned his back on his mother, refusing to acknowledge her presence.
Heartbroken, the mother quietly left the scene, her dreams shattered. She had sacrificed everything for her son’s future, hoping for a moment of acknowledgment and gratitude. Instead, she was met with rejection and humiliation on the day she had dreamed of for so long.
It reflects a common theme of sacrifice, hard work, and unfulfilled expectations. It underscores the pain that can arise when someone fails to appreciate the sacrifices made by their loved ones. This narrative serves as a reminder of the importance of gratitude and recognizing the efforts of those who support us in our journey to success.
One can’t help but think of the contrast of Peter denying his Lord on the eve of Jesus’ crucifixion and how when Jesus had warned him about the crowing rooster that his heart was smitten when it occurred three times. At that moment Jesus back was not turned away from Peter, but across the courtyard their eyes met. Jesus’ look was not one of judgment or I told you so, but one of compassion. Peter missed the crucifixion because he was on his face in the garden of gethsemane weeping bitterly and confessing his sin. Through this story I hear the bitter weeping of the mother with the ungrateful son.
One can only hope that the New inaugurated doctor of this story repented of the shame that he had heaped on his mother’s work of a lifetime.
