My Favourite Stories #299

The most beautiful melody in the Universe.

I walk in the morning with my dog and when we reach the top of the hill and turn around for the return journey I can hear and see the freeway across he paddocks. I see cars and trucks rushing along intent on the journey of the day. I capture in that moment the meaninglessness of it all.

In 2007 the Washington Post conducted an experiment. They arranged for Joshua Bell, one of the world’s leading classical violinists to play outside the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station in Washington DC. They wanted to gauge the reaction of passing commuters. It was early morning rush hour on a cold winter’s day.

Holding his $3.5 million Stradivarius violin, he played 6 pieces for about half an hour. During that time only 7 people stopped to listen for at least a minute, another 1097 walked by, too busy to notice. People tossed loose change into his violin case, totalling $32.17c. This for a world-famous genius who can earn $1000/minute playing in great concert halls.

There is a lesson here! We rush through life and can miss it’s significant. People are so busy making a life, that they forget that life is very short, and eternity is very long. Jesus said “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.  And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?.” (Matthw 16:25-26.) Unfortunately, trying to tell people about Jesus can be like playing a $3.5 million Stradivarius to people who will not stop to listen. We may be playing the most beautiful melody in the universe, but most people walk on by. Life is the place and time where we make our decisions for eternity. Eternity has no clock; decisions belong to time and the Bibe says “now is the time.”

I would like to encourage you to take some time to experience this amazing melody. The curtain call of this world seems to be drawing near. Stories will soon be done (for now – have so many more.) I hope you will continue with me as we next explore the very important manuscript for our time – The Book of Daniel. It speaks powerfully to our time and is an important foundation for understanding the book of Revelation. Come and stand with me on the shores of time and listen to the whispering of eternity. You will be invited to register for the Daniel Unlocked SMS series soon.
