At 2am, on the 16th of September, 1979 two families, inflated a homemade hot air balloon, in a forest clearing, and attempted to drift to freedom across no man’s land and the Berlin Wall into West Germany. They had been trapped after the conclusion of WWII when they found themselves in a communist country. By stealth, they gradually gathered the things they would need to attempt an escape. Hundreds of people had been shot or captured trying to cross the wall. Thankfully their attempt was successful. We too are trapped in a dark and forbidding place. From the rebellion of our first parents, Satan has taken control of this world and styled himself as its ruler. This verse is a promise that when Jesus came it was to restore our broken relationship with the Father and oust the Devil from his position of power. On the cross God himself paid the redemption price and anyone who defects from the Devil’s side will be set free. The day is soon coming when Jesus returns and our rescue is complete.
