The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer… Ruth 4:14
The story of Ruth in the Bible is one of my favorites. It recounts the tribulations of an Israelite woman and her spouse. Facing famine, they decide to leave Israel for Moab. There, her husband and two sons pass away. Choosing to return home, she urges her daughters-in-law to go back to their own families. Ruth pledges to Naomi, “Where you go, I will go, and your God will be my God.” Once back in Bethlehem, Ruth unknowingly gleans in the field of Boaz, a kinsman redeemer. Naomi advises Ruth to approach Boaz and ask him to place the corner of his garment over her. According to God’s law, a kinsman redeemer was to marry a widow, redeem land, and settle debts for kin. This beautifully symbolizes salvation. We are lost, impoverished, indebted, and powerless. Thankfully, we are not left alone to face the repercussions of our sins. Jesus, our kinsman redeemer, puts the corner of his garment over everyone who goes to him asking to be saved. Our Kinsman-redeemer loves us and wants to make us a part of his family. So, ask him to redeem you.
