Everyday Promises – 164

See the deliverance of the lord

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today… Exodus 14:13 NIV

Martin Luther, a protestant reformer, discovered the truth of salvation while studying as a priest. With joy he began to share his findings but the church leaders tried to stop him. He was summoned to the Diet of Worms on 18 April, 1521, where the Emperor Charles V presided. He was told to recant his beliefs. The final part of his reply is reputed to be the following. “… I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. Here I stand, I can do no other. May God help me.” He was found guilty of heresy and declared an outlaw. His literature was banned and it was a crime to give him food or shelter. Fortunately, he had been promised safe conduct home again. En route he mysteriously disappeared and was secreted away to Wartburg Castle, as a place of refuge. He stood firm and God delivered him. We have those who would destroy us too but as you commit your way to God and trust his care he will deliver you when the need arises. So stand firm.
