Anne Sullivan had a poverty stricken and difficult childhood; where she herself became nearly blind, her mother died, and her father abandoned her to a squalid almshouse. Anne was incensed with the injustices of the world and determined to make a difference to herself and others. She clawed an education from life and then by her tireless devotion to the plight of blind and deaf Helen, she changed the world, not only for Helen Keller, but for blind and mute people everywhere. Anne was teacher, mentor and companion to Helen for 49 years. Anne guided Helen in every success; learning to communicate with her fingers, read braille and study effectively so she could graduate from Radcliffe College.
