Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. Psalm 37:7-9 NIV
You may have been a victim of a great wrong. Perhaps a theft, a murder of a loved one, a rape, abuse or some other kind of evil. It is hard not to retaliate, to plot our revenge and so satisfy our anger over the injustice we have suffered. Yet, this is not God’s way. If we are to live out our Christian beliefs, then we are told to forgive and leave the revenge to God. That seems a hard ask, when perpetrators of evil seem to walk free. Sometimes the law does catch up with them, but often wickedness is carried out without any consequences. Today’s promise says that God will deal with evil in the end. Why is it that God doesn’t want us to tackle the wrong ourselves? Carrying anger, hatred and bitterness in our hearts will only destroy us. When we hold onto the wrong it allows the evil person to dominate our lives forever. Dwelling on the evil will only crush joy, peace and love from our own souls. Ask the Lord to help you let go of the anger, heal the pain and pass the revenge to our great and just God. He will deal with it and you will be requited at last.
