Everyday Promises – 299

A song in the night

Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.  Psalm 63:7 NIV

Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown into prison for preaching the gospel. Instead of being broken, discouraged and forlorn they sang hymns. When an earthquake broke open every prison door the jailer was devastated and about to kill himself. Paul told him not to harm himself because all the prisoners were still in the prison, despite the open doors. The warden realised that his life had been spared by God. He took Paul and Silas into his home and committed his life to God. The impact of praising God in adversity was surprising in this story. There are times when we all suffer great loss and sadness. The song in our heart seems to die. Maybe that is the time when we most need to sing. Perhaps it will cheer our own heart and help us to remember that no matter what trouble we face God still has us in the shadow of his wings. He will come to our aid and heal our brokenness. We can rely on his bountiful goodness in every circumstance.
