Everyday Promises – 302

Run the race with perseverance

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  2 Peter 1:10-11 NIV

It was August 7, 1954, Roger Bannister and John Landy lined up at the start line in the Commonweath Games held in Vancouver, B.C. A great rivalry had sprung up in the preceding months as each had clocked a time under 4 minutes for the mile. The tension was high as the starting gun sent the runners striding out. John soon took the lead and led the way for the majority of the race. They were nearing the finish line when John glanced back, and Roger hurtled past him to win the race. It was the first time that runners had ever completed the race in under 4 minutes. Some believe that John’s glance behind cost him the race and perhaps it did. Unlike an Olympic race where there is only one gold medal to win, we also run a race, but everyone can win if they are really earnest in seeking God, maintaining a relationship with him and walking the narrow road to the kingdom. So, don’t look back!
