Everyday Promises – 74

YOU PRESERVE MY LIFE

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life… Psalm 138:7 NIV

Gladys Aylward was an untrained woman God called to China. In 1930 she set off on an overland journey to assist the missionary Jenny Lawson. They opened an inn in Yangchen and told Bible stories to the travellers. After Jenny’s death, Gladys was asked by the Mandarin to be his foot inspector. She did the job bravely. Her courage was admired and one day she was summoned to the prison. The prisoners were rioting and killing each other. The soldiers were not brave enough to stop it. The warden challenged Gladys to go in and stop the riot ‘as being a Christian, she had nothing to fear’. Gladys did go in. She was afraid but eventually quieted the men. After talking with their spokesman, she promised improvements to their pitiable circumstance. Just as God preserved Gladys in the prison that day, he can preserve your life in trouble too.
