09 Jan Following The Evidence #136
Mark 9:43, Jeremiah 17:27, 2Chronicles 36:19 “The fire that shall not be quenched” is the fire that cannot be put out until it has do its work.
Matthew 25:41 v:46… ‘eternal punishment’ and eternal fire. Are eternal in its results. See Jude 7. This happened thousands of years ago and is still not burning. The result was eternal!
Daniel 12:2 and Matthew 25:46 “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Notice he did not say punishing (verb). Romans 6:23 says that the wages, or punishment, for sin is death. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 states that the punishment of the wicked is ‘everlasting destruction’.. The Bible nowhere uses the expression eternal punishing.
Revelation 20:10 “The devil, … will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” The Beast and False prophet are symbolic creatures. Even Satan will be destroyed. His outcome is eternal death. The lake of fire will bring about his destruction. His trial in the fire will result in his eternal end. Already V:9 has said the wicked have been “consumed by the fire from heaven.”
Ezekiel 28:18,19 Clearly reveals Satan’s end – brought to ashes – never to live again. We need to understand the meaning of the word ‘forever’, as did the ancient Hebrew. To him it did not mean to continue throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. ‘Forever’ meant a continuous period without a break – sometimes long and sometimes very short. For example, in Exodus 21:1-6 it meant the lifetime of the servant. In 1 Chronicles 28:4 (see also 1 Chronicles 29:27) ‘forever’ was for 40 years, or as long as David was to live. In 1 Samuel 1:22-28 ‘forever’ in verse 22 meant simply as long as Samuel lived. In Jonah 12:6, ‘forever’ was for three days – the length of time Jonah spent in the big fish. So, Satan burns only as long as he stays alive. When he dies and his body becomes ashes, ‘forever’ ceases.
The Bible clearly teaches that the wicked will be destroyed by fire and will cease to exist for all time. Out of the ashes of the cleansed earth, purified by fire: God makes a new earth – the eternal homeland of the redeemed. Sin and its consequences are eradicated for all time. The only one consumed in hell fire are those who have chosen to cling to sin rather than turn to a loving God and accept offer through His Son.
Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them: “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways!” God wants all humanity to be saved. It is not His desire that anyone be destroyed. They who suffer eternal destruction do so because of their persistence in choosing evil and their choice in rejecting the guidance of Jesus Christ. People shut the door of eternal life against themselves.
The punishment of the wicked is God’s ‘strange act’ (Isaiah 28:21 KJV). It is out of harmony with His nature to destroy, but God’s withdrawal of the gift of life from the wicked is in kindness to them. They could not be happy in a sinless universe. They would rather die than be in the presence of God, the angels and righteous.
Because God is love, He must ‘amputate’ the infection of sin from the universe. For the sake of all creation and their happiness, sin must be entirely cut off. If this was not so the contamination may spread. But God will make a clean cut – a complete separation from sin. The affliction of sin will not rise again. God loves you too. He wants you to have eternal life, but only you can choose. God has already chosen you, for this is why Jesus died on Calvary – to save you from the second death and give you eternal life. But you must choose Him. He will not force you, but He pleads with you that you might choose LIFE.
One thing is very clear from scripture. If you do not accept God’s offer of eternal life through Jesus, He is not going to roast and toast you for the rest of eternity.
