Footsteps #152
Behind the writing of 2nd Corinthians lies the darkest hour of Paul’s life. The trials of this time we will see will be enumerated as Paul writes. The Christians of the last days live in a world that is more and more complex, troubled, and corrupt. At the same time, despite increasing iniquity and the growing coldness of many, God requires that His people “show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
It is fitting, then, to define the spiritual life that Jesus taught which characterizes the citizens of His kingdom. This we will find is what 2 Corinthians does. We expect the coming of Jesus in our day, and by grace, we must be fit for it. Similar to Jesus Sermon on the Mount, (Matt.5-7) with its beatitudes (blessings), Paul follows a similar line in his 2nd letter (which was actually his 4th – 2 have been lost.)
In His Mount of Blessing’s sermon, Jesus had specified the qualifications of the royal family of His heavenly kingdom. He never flattered the high and mighty but did describe those who will become heirs of God and joint-heirs with Himself. Those who possess the character specified will share with Him in the blessing and the glory and the honour that will come to Him. Notice over the next few weeks how this theme will play out in this 2nd letter to the Corinthians.
2Corinthians is a compendium of amazing thoughts and uplifting verses. It is Paul’s testimony of the “with-God life” forged amidst the trials and battles that this life affords. As I look over its pages (It takes about 30 minutes to read) I find underlined many of my favourite verses and some great theology. To me personally, theology is simply faith seeking understanding. I want to understand things. Theology is not heavy, deep thoughts cast in mist, but light and truth cast upon my path as I make my heavenward journey through a dark world. Let us now walk together with Paul through this book of wonderful theology wrapped in autobiography.
