Meditations on the Psalms #105

Day 105

Psalm 48: Read here – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2048&version=NASB

The psalmist began by simply describing the greatness of God and His worthiness to be praised. He connected this praise with a place: Jerusalem – described as ‘the city of our God, in His holy mountain.’

How great The LORD is essentially none can conceive, but we can all see that he is great in the deliverance of his people, great in the esteem of the delivered, and great in the hearts of those enemies whom he scatters by their own fears.

The NT develops the comparison of Jerusalem as the Holy Mountain, with Mount Sinai in Galatians 4:24-26 and Hebrews 12:18-24.

Isaiah 14:13 uses the phrase ‘the farthest sides of the north’ to refer to heaven, the place where God is enthroned. By an effective turn of phrase, it portrays the literal Zion in terms of the heavenly one – the community whose king is God. There are cities with better natural resources and more natural beauty than Jerusalem. Yet there is only one city of the great King, (v3) the King of kings. He is present, and her refuge.

The following verses (4-7) describe the gathering of the Assyrian armies and the terror of their flight – a work that is attributed to God.

V8 is a simple yet beautiful statement of God fulfilling His promises and working in the present day, not only in the past. We should be aware of the great things He has done in the past ages (we have heard) and pray with faith for great works to be done in our own time (so we have seen).

The delivered think on their deliverance. The thought turns from a focus on the strength and majesty of God to a consideration of His covenant love (v9). The temple was a graphic demonstration of His covenant love, with all the lessons it portrayed.

The goodness of God should not only be celebrated but proclaimed. He who rescues also guides; We need not only deliverance but also direction. Has the city of your soul been assailed? Have you been imprisoned within yourself by an enemy? Has not God delivered you and have you praised Him? Read v14
