19 Sep Meditations on the Psalms #238
Psalm 109 Part 3
David needed help from Yahweh(God) Adonai(Lord) (v21). David asked on the basis of God’s ‘name and lovingkindness,’ not on the basis of his own righteousness.
David was ‘poor and needy’ ‘wounded within’, and shows that he was the one broken in heart mentioned in v16. What did David mean when he said he was poor and needy? (v22RSV). He had a personal fortune worth millions, perhaps billions, much of which was later donated for the construction of the Lord’s temple. It included 112 tonnes of Gold and 262 tonnes of refined silver (1Chron29:4-5). So, he certainly wasn’t poverty-stricken. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” The poor and needy person is the one who cannot get himself out of the jam he is in; he has no resources to deliver himself and must depend on God. Absalom was threatening to take over the kingdom, with all its wealth and power, and David knew that he was completely powerless. David knew that he was completely dependent upon the Lord.
Are you poor and needy? Is there an area in your life in which you feel powerless? Depend on the Lord, “for He stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them” (v31 NLT).
It was very important to David that his enemies and all who looked on him knew that his rescue was from God’s hand; the Lord had done it (v27). He didn’t want deliverance only for his own sake, but also for the glory of God.
David understood that the curses of his enemies could never triumph over the blessings of God in his life v28. This would make David ‘rejoice’ and his enemies ‘clothed with shame,’ wearing their ‘disgrace as if it was a mantle.’
The psalm began with addressing ‘the God of my praise’; it ends with the confident vow that the singer will yet praise Him. It painted an adversary Ahithophel (read satan) standing at the right hand of the wicked to condemn him; it ends with the assurance that the Lord stands at the right hand of His afflicted servant, as his advocate to protect him.
