19 Sep Meditations on the Psalms #241
Psalm 110 Part 3
The oath (v4) was so important that Paul in Hebrews refers to it five times! Hebrews 5:5-6,10 emphasize that this was Yahweh’s declaration, not something that the Messiah claimed for Himself. In Hebrews6:20, the emphasis is on the idea that Jesus the Messiah serves now and forever as a living, active High Priest for His people. Hebrews7:17 emphasizes that the priesthood of Jesus the Messiah according to the order of Melchizedek is better than the priestly order of Aaron because it is eternal and will never end. Hebrews7:21 emphasizes that the priesthood of Jesus the Messiah according to the order of Melchizedek is better than the priestly order of Aaron because it was founded on a direct oath of Yahweh, unlike the priestly order of Aaron. Jesus is a priest forever interceding on our behalf (Heb7:25.)
Many are willing enough to have Jesus as priest but not so willing to accept Him as king. He must be King, or He will not be priest! He must be king, making you right, then giving you His peace which passes understanding. Let your heart be the city of peace (Salem) where the King can reign forever.
The second part of the psalm(v5ff) carries the King into the battlefield. He comes forth from the throne, where He sat at Yahweh’s right hand, and now Yahweh stands at His right hand. They are acting as one. The army of volunteers from v3 is gone and now the battle is the Lord’s. His authority (v2) now brings judgment against even the greatest of Kings.V6. This verse seems to anticipate the slaughter at the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation16:16, 19:11-21). The choice for every man is being crushed beneath His foot, or being exalted to sit with Him on His throne. ‘He that overcomes, to him will I give to sit down with Me on My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father on His throne.’ It is better to sit on His throne than to be His footstool. His own head shall be lifted high in victory, and his people who follow Him shall be exalted also.
