Meditations on the Psalms #265

Psalm 118 Part 2

With great anxiety, people seek powerful allies in all their worldly conflicts. I have seen it in churches, school playground tiffs, lawsuits, politics, or any other field where there are attempts at worldly advancement. To win the friendship and interest of those who can further their aims people think if a certain person were on their side, all will go well. No one is so well off as he who is able to say “The Lord is for me.” (v6&7)

Over 1000 years before the book of Romans was written, the psalmist understood the principle of Rom.8:31. The psalmist had nothing to fear, even from those who hated him. Jesus knew this by His own experience as each of His disciples forsook Him at the cross, and even leaders who were sympathetic to Him (e.g.Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus) did not give their help to Jesus during His suffering and crucifixion. When Luther was summoned to the council of Worms he was warned by his friends not to go, but he quoted Ps.118:6.
In the pattern of Hebrew poetry vs10&11 repeat themselves for emphasis (Parallelism) The singer knew what it was to be trapped by enemies who hated him.

I picture Jesus singing these words, knowing that only a few hours later He would be truly surrounded by those who would mock, torture, and kill Him. Surrounding him like bees (v12) Christ’s enemies are so spiteful, that in fighting against his kingdom, they regard not what will become of themselves – bees die when they sting! “Oh death where is your sting!” 1Cor.15:55 – “thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” v57. Jesus was about to take the sting of death on our behalf and with that, the power of death would be broken – forever. Just so, the psalmist looks beyond the burning fiery thorns to its extinction v12. The blaze of God’s wrath was rained down upon Christ, and now we have safety and security in Him who paid our price of eternal redemption. From the mountain of eternity, the power of evil will turn out to be as short-lived as it was fierce.
