Meditations on the Psalms #288

Psalm 125 Part 1

The opening phrase of this psalm is but one of the facets of our relationship with God. Those who trust, also fear (reverence) him. They also love and know Him in a personal bond, that is too intimate to be just a passing liaison. God will comfort those who give credit to Him by quitting all other confidences. Such a believer(saint), like Mt Zion, ‘cannot be moved;’ they will abide ‘forever.’ Unfortunately, some Christians are like sand, ever-shifting, and unstable (Matt 7:26). Others are like the sea, restless and unsettled (Isa 57:20, James 1:6). Then there are those like the wind, uncertain and inconsistent (Eph4:14.) True believers are like a mountain – strong, stable, and secure, they will ‘last from this time forth and forever.’(V2 NASB).
Remember how Elisha’s servant couldn’t understand why Elisha wasn’t bothered about the hordes of enemy soldiers surrounding Jerusalem. It looked like a disaster, but Elisha could see horses and chariots of fire surrounding the enemy soldiers. (2 Kings 6:8-23). Paul and Silas sang at midnight in the Philippian jail, and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego calmly entered the fiery furnace. How does it look for you today? Hopeless? Take another look.

Jerusalem was like an amphitheatre surrounded by higher peaks. God ‘surrounds His people’ so that nothing can get to them unless it firsts passes through Him. His people trust Him even when circumstances seem to deny His presence. The vicissitudes of life are inevitable but we trust Him regardless. We must not separate v2 from v1. The promise of v2 has the condition of v1. The word ‘forever occurs in both verses. In the days when Israel failed in faith, the surrounding mountains failed to secure safety to Zion. It was overcome and trodden down. Let that not be unto us. Have confidence and trust the author and sustainer of life. Trust begets tranquillity; confidence is the mother of constancy. There is no fickleness where there is faith. Our strength is to sit still (Isa 30:7KJV.) Faith is a living daring confidence in God’s grace. It is so sure and certain that you can stake your forever destiny on it.
