Meditations on the Psalms #289

Psalm 125 Part 2

We live in uncertain times and this is a psalm for such times. The vagaries of life can lead us down dark and fearsome paths. Having ‘a rock of refuge’ is the privilege of God’s people. The glorious destiny that God has set before us is the goal upon which we focus. “We run the race set before us, looking to Jesus who is the author and finisher of our Faith” (Heb 12:1-3). With the light of God’s word, like a lamp to our feet, the shadows fall behind us. The day will come when this world will seem like it was just an inconvenient night in a bad hotel. Notice the acute analysis of humanity in v3. Wicked or righteous, there is no third category! “For me or against me,” Jesus said. The conjunction ‘so’ is the red-light word in this passage. V4 tells us that everything depends on what is in our hearts. Solomon said that when our heart is right all is right (Proverbs 4:23.). We are to keep our hearts with all vigilance for from it flow the issues of life and eternity. The Covenant at Sinai contained the principle of blessing for obedience and cursing for disobedience. Vs4-5 is simply a prayer that God would fulfil that aspect of the covenant.

However, the amazing greatness of the revelation of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that God did good for those who are not good. We remember that ‘in due time Christ died for the ungodly’ (Rom5:6)) and God ‘demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us’ (Rom5:8). Paul says,” God’s love has been poured out upon us.” Never concentrate on your love for God but concentrate on God’s love for you. Our love is like the moon; always waxing and waning but at its best full of holes. God’s love is like the sun – unfailing – pouring out fully, instantaneously, without interruption. His peace be upon you! (v5)
