Meditations on the Psalms #52

Day 52

Psalm 26: Read here – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2026&version=NASB

Amid the perils of our pilgrimage on this earth, the counsel of v3 to ever keep before our minds, in sustained meditation, the lovingkindness of our God, and walking in His truth is imperative. The theme of the poem is in v1 ‘integrity’. Troubled times are when we can ‘waver’ from the path in word or action. David is only concerned about his reputation before His God. He was confident enough in his life of faith to ask God to examine his heart (v2). We ourselves need to demonstrate this kind of integrity to unbelievers and show that the path of faith and morality is the happy and successful way to live.

David then described several specific ways that his life demonstrated a living faith.v4-8 c.f.1 Corinthians 15:33.

Today we see young people making associations in entertainment, and often choosing very poorly. They allow the wicked to amuse, then to be examples, then models, and finally idols. David’s statement here applies to these kind of contacts and associations. How important that we provide positive role models for our young people.

David did not believe he was sinless or perfect but he did claim a clear conscience before God. The washing of hands, which we do many times a day(v6), should today remind us of the cleansing that comes from Jesus and His work on the cross. Two things will always be found together: love for God and a recoil from sin. The latter will cause us to separate from evildoers. (v5) In the end a person is judged by what they love and hate (v:8)

Sin may bribe us with momentary pleasure, attention, fame, excitement, comfort of life, or whatever. We should never be willing to do something morally wrong because it is rewarded in some way. A soul walking in its integrity will take bribes neither from men, nor sin itself.

The song began in the minor, but it has now reached the major key. Saints often sing themselves into happiness. The even place upon which our foot stands v:12 is the sure, covenant faithfulness, eternal promise and immutable oath of the Lord of Hosts.
