28 Dec Meditations on the Psalms #56
Day 56
Psalm 29: Read here – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2029&version=NASB
—A Psalm for the storm-tossed Soul.
The psalm begins with a call to worship given to the angels v1-2 who worship in the beauty of holiness (KJV). It is pure praise. It does not call upon us to do anything because the psalm itself is doing the only thing it is concerned about. It is praising God. Then from v3, we have a description of a thunderstorm rolling in the sky. In v5 it is in the north with the lightning (v7) and thunder (v8). Then it spreads south into the desert region(v8).
The covenant name of Yahweh is mentioned 18 times in 11 verses, and 7 times it is the voice of the Lord; once (v3) it is the ‘God of Glory’. God is in the storm; is He in yours. He IS in your storm but do you believe it.
There come times in life when above and around the tempest rages; when our mountains which we thought were stable are made to skip (v6) and our proud cedars are all laid low (v5); when one terrifying fork of lightening seems to cleave our inner world; and we look upon desolation! What then! Listen to the angelic hosts above, in the sanctuary above, where Revelation says one hundred thousand million angels surround the throne chanting praise to God. “And in His temple everything says Glory!” (v9) Get heaven’s view of events and there will be no despair. C.f. Ps 145:5-6
The assurance of Yahweh’s blessing, who is ‘king of the flood’, is addressed to men. Remember v1-2 had addressed the angelic host. If you feel you are amidst the storm, David’s conclusion (v11) tells of the peace we can have in the storm.” The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.” During the storm, He will give strength to His people. Following it He will give them peace.
Is not this a noble Psalm to be sung in stormy weather? Can you sing amid the thunder? Will you be able to sing when the last thunders are let loose, and Jesus judges the living and the dead’? (2Tim 4:1, 1Pet 4:5)
