22 Feb Minute Meditations of Hope and Encouragement #145
Between the psalm of the cross (22) and the pilgrims entry with the triumphant king of glory into the eternal city (Ps24) lies the pilgrims psalm. Sometimes called the shepherds psalm, although that image runs out in v2. V1 talks about absolute trust: “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams;” there is a flock but for now it is the Lord and I. This psalm could be called the he/me psalm. Notice how this relationship is intensely personal. V1-2 the shepherd and the sheep. V2-3 is the guide and the traveller; ” He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honour to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. ” v5-6 the traveller has arrived at home and so we have the host and the guest ( notice it us still just him and me). ” You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honour me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love (chesed) will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.“ The Psalm is in three sections: 1) provision (Christ ) 2) direction (Holy Spirit) 3) communion (The Father). Did you ever consider that the whole God head is there cheering you on through the valley of shadows and the steep mountains? In him (according to this psalm) we find rest v2a refreshment v2b repentance v3a guidance v3b companionship v4 comfort v4b sustenance v5a joy 5b anything 6.
My favourite Old Testament word is also in verse 6 “chesed” unfailing love. When life is hard keep your eyes on the goal. One day you will see this life as if it were just a bad night in an inconvenient night hotel.
