Minute Meditations of Hope and Encouragement #79

Jesus quoted these words from Isaiah’s 5th messianic poem in Isa 61:1ff “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted, he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound… to comfort those who mourn… to grant them the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting if the Lord, that he may be glorified. … v10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exalt in my God.” Quoted by Jesus in Luke 4:18ff.

The ‘mantle of praise’ is the highest spiritual state of the soul, unfortunately, we can’t always be there. The Lord has given us a garment (v10) that is honourable and worthy of praise. This is Christ’s righteousness (perfection) that covers us like a robe. The provision made is complete and the eternal righteousness of Christ is placed to the account of every believing person. The costly spotless robe, woven in the loom of heaven, has been provided for the repenting, believing sinner and he may say “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul will be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.”
