Minute Meditations of Hope and Encouragement #9

Catch a glimpse of our Lord’s agony in the Garden, which was but the first drops of the tremendous shower which was now discharging itself upon His head. He, at that time foresaw the speedy coming of the traitor disciple, the seizure by the guards, the mock trials before the Sanhedrin and Pilate and Herod, the scourging, the buffeting, the crown of thorns, the shame, the spitting, the nakedness. All this rose up before His mind, and as it is a general rule of nature that the foresight of trial is more grievous than the trial itself, so we can conceive how it was that He who answered not a word when in the conflict, could not restrain himself from strong crying and tears at the prospect of it.

If you can revive before your mind’s eye this morning the terrible incidents of His death and remember who He was – the hoarding through the streets of Jerusalem, the nailing to the cross, the thirst, the pain, but above all else the forsaking of His God, you cannot but marvel that this is the Son of the Living God.

In Gethsemane see the voluntary nature of His suffering, as even before calvary His blood flowed freely, as He sweat great drops of Blood. It is here that speech fails to convey any idea of the truth of God as it is in Christ Jesus. Behold here a person innocent without taint within, or flaw without. A person hanging between heaven and earth as if He were not fit for either. A person who magnified the law and made it honourable. A person who served both God and man even unto death. But more, here we have a divine person; so divine that in Acts 20:28 Paul calls His blood, the “blood of God.”
