29 Jun Reflections on Revelation #179
Day 179
Numbers run like golden threads throughout scripture. Here is a very brief summary: 1 represents Unity. God is one. Jesus, by his singular sacrifice, has made possible the forgiveness of ALL our sins. He is the one Mediator and Shepherd.
2 represents union, division or the verification of facts by witnesses. A man and woman are made one in marriage. There are 2 Testaments and 2 Covenants. Jesus was the 2nd Adam. Rev 11 has 2 witnesses.
3 pictures completeness. The 3 righteous patriarchs before the flood were Abel, Enoch and Noah. After the deluge there was Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jesus prayed three times in the Garden. He was crucified at the 3rd hour of the day and died at the 9th hour (3 p.m.). There were 3 hours of darkness that covered the land from the 6th hour to the 9th hour. God is triune, as is man (Body, soul and spirit.)
4 represents universality “the 4 corners of the earth.”. On the fourth day of ‘creation week’ God completed the material universe. On this day he brought into existence our solar system (Genesis 1:14 – 19). The 4th of the Ten Commandments is to remember and keep God’s Sabbath day (Exodus 20:9 – 11). The Sabbath day is tied directly to the creation week.
5 is the number of grace. The most holy place in the sanctuary was built on the number 5. There are 5 primary types of offerings God commanded Israel to bring to him. The Book of Psalms is divided into 5 major sections.
6 symbolizes man and human weakness, the evils of Satan and the manifestation of sin.
7 is the number of completeness and perfection (both physical and spiritual). It derives much of its meaning from being tied directly to God’s creation. There are 7 days in a week. 7 occurs repeatedly in scripture and especially in Revelation.
8 is the number of new beginnings. 8 people were saved in the Ark. Boys were circumcised on the 8th day. Jesus was resurrected 8 days after his entry intro Jerusalem for “passion week.”
9 symbolizes divine completeness or conveys the meaning of finality and judgment. Christ died at the 9th hour.
10 signifies testimony, law, responsibility, and the completeness of order. A tithe(10th) is a testimony of our faith in the Lord. The Passover lamb (and Jesus) were selected on day 10 of the 1st month. Satan’s symbolic kingdoms have 10 toes, 10 heads, 10 horns, and crowns
11 can symbolize disorder, chaos, and judgment. Coming after 10 (which represents law and responsibility), 11 represents the opposite, which is the irresponsibility of breaking the Law, bringing disorder and judgment.
12 symbolizes God’s power and authority. It is the kingdom number. 12 Tribes, 12 apostles, 12 foundations on the city, 12 gates, 144,000, Christ’s bride in Revelation 12, the church, wears a crown containing 12 stars. The New Jerusalem is measured in 12’s
13 is symbolic of rebellion and lawlessness. 13 represents all the governments created by men, and inspired by Satan, in outright rebellion against the Eternal. The dragon, a symbol for satan, is found 13 times in Revelation. Satan is behind all rebellion against God. Joshua marched around Jericho 13 times. 13 famines are recorded in scripture. Mark 7 mentions 13 things that defile a person.
24 is associated with the priesthood and is connected with sanctuary worship. In Revelation, this becomes the 24 elders.
40 generally symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation. It rained for 40 days and nights. Moses spent 40 years in Egypt, then 40 years in the desert. He was on Mt Sinai 40 days twice, receiving God’s law. They spent 40 days spying out the land and then 40 years wandering the desert. Jonah prophesied for 40 days as did Ezekiel. Elijah spent 40 days on Mt Horeb. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. He also appeared to his disciples and others for 40 days after his resurrection from the dead etc.
42 has a direct connection to the antichrist. His evil efforts will last 42 months in the end time. 42 months is 1260 days, prophetically 1260 years when the 2 witnesses were trampled underfoot.
